History of Ireland

Ireland was settled by hunter-gatherers after the last Ice Age, and Gaelic culture and language spread across the island in the first millennium BC and after. Anglo-Norman forces arrived in 1169, beginning centuries of English and later British involvement. The Act of Union joined Ireland to Great Britain in 1801, and the Great Famine of the 1840s caused mass death and emigration. After the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence, the Irish Free State was created in 1922, while Northern Ireland remained in the United Kingdom. Ireland is today a republic and a member of the European Union.
