History of Bangladesh
The Bengal region has a long history of kingdoms, including the Pala Empire and the Bengal Sultanate, before coming under Mughal rule. British East India Company dominance began after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. When British India was partitioned in 1947, the eastern part of Bengal became East Pakistan, part of Pakistan. Disputes over language and political representation led to the Language Movement of 1952 and later to a war in 1971, after which Bangladesh emerged as an independent state. It is a parliamentary republic with Dhaka as its capital.
