About Janmashtami

Janmashtami, or Krishna Janmashtami, is the Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It falls on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada, usually in August or September. According to tradition Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura, so many devotees fast during the day and break the fast after midnight prayers.

Temples and homes are decorated, scenes from Krishna’s life are displayed as jhankis, and devotional songs (bhajans) and kirtans fill the night. In Maharashtra and Gujarat the festival is famous for Dahi Handi, where teams form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high above the street, recalling Krishna’s love of butter. The festival is observed in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and across the world, including at ISKCON temples.

How Janmashtami is celebrated

  • Fasting and staying awake for midnight prayers and aarti.
  • Singing bhajans and kirtans and visiting temples.
  • Decorating cribs and shrines with flowers and displaying scenes (jhankis).
  • Making sweets and butter-based offerings for Krishna.
  • Taking part in Dahi Handi, the human-pyramid pot-breaking event.
