Video Compressor

Make a video file smaller so it is easier to email, message or store. Load a video, choose a quality preset and a maximum height, see an estimate of the new size, and download the compressed MP4 or WebM. It runs in your browser, so your video is never uploaded.

How to use Video Compressor

  1. Choose a video file such as MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. A preview player and the file details appear.
  2. Pick a quality preset (High, Medium, Small or Custom) and a maximum height such as 720p. Tick Remove audio if you do not need sound.
  3. Check the estimated size, then press Compress video. A progress bar shows while it works, and you can cancel.
  4. Compare the original and new sizes, then press Download.

How video compression works

A video file is mostly picture data. Its size is roughly the bitrate multiplied by the length, plus the audio. This tool decodes your video in the browser and encodes it again at a lower bitrate, and optionally at a smaller frame size, so the new file takes less space.

Lower bitrates remove fine detail, so very low settings look soft or blocky. Reducing the frame size is often the best first step, because fewer pixels need fewer bits.

Choosing settings

  • Medium with 720p is a good balance for sharing on messaging apps.
  • Small with 480p or 360p gives the smallest files for email limits.
  • High with Original height keeps the most detail while still saving space on large recordings.
  • Custom lets you set the video bitrate yourself, in kilobits per second.
  • Remove audio if the video is silent anyway; it saves a little more.

Formats and speed

MP4 plays almost everywhere, and WebM suits the web. Speed depends on your device and on the length and size of the video. Audio is saved at 128 kilobits per second when kept.

Limits

Files larger than 1 gigabyte are not accepted, and the finished video has to fit in your browser's memory. The size estimate is approximate. This tool does not trim, crop or add text. It needs a recent browser with video encoding support, such as current Chrome, Edge or Safari. Nothing is uploaded; it is built with the open source Mediabunny library.

Why use this video compressor tool

  • Quality presets or your own bitrate. Choose High, Medium or Small, or enter a custom video bitrate in kilobits per second for full control over the size.
  • Smaller frame size. Limit the height to 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. The width follows automatically so the picture is never stretched.
  • Honest results. You see the original size, the new size and the percentage saved. If the result is not smaller, the tool says so instead of hiding it.
  • Private and no watermark. The video is compressed on your device, never uploaded, and the result has no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a video online for free?

Choose your video, pick a quality preset and a maximum height, then press Compress video. When it finishes, check the new size and press Download. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is read and compressed in your browser using your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so private videos stay on your device.

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on the original. Large phone or camera recordings often shrink a lot, but a video that is already well compressed may not get smaller. The estimate shown before you start is approximate, and the real sizes are shown after.

Will compressing reduce the quality?

Yes, some. Compression re-encodes the video with a lower bitrate and optionally a smaller frame size, which removes detail. High keeps more detail, Small gives the smallest file. Keep your original file in case you need it.

Why is the compressed video bigger than the original?

If the original already uses a low bitrate, re-encoding it at your chosen settings can make it larger. Try the Small preset, a lower maximum height, or remove the audio. If it is still larger, keep the original file.

Why does compressing take a while?

Every frame is decoded and encoded again on your device. Longer and higher-resolution videos take longer, and the progress bar shows how far along it is. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
