How to use Audio Trimmer

  1. Choose an audio file such as MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG. A waveform appears.
  2. Drag the blue handles to mark where to start and stop, or type the start and end times.
  3. Press Play selection to listen. Add a fade in or fade out if you want a smoother start or end.
  4. Press Download trimmed audio. The result is saved as a WAV file.

How trimming works

The tool reads your audio file into memory, shows its waveform and keeps only the part between your start and end points. Cutting is exact to a fraction of a second, because it copies the samples between the two points rather than re-encoding them.

The waveform shows loud parts as tall bars and quiet parts as short ones, which helps you find where speech or music starts and ends.

Tips for clean cuts

  • Cut in a quiet gap between words or beats so the edit is not heard.
  • Use a short fade in and fade out, such as a quarter to half a second, to avoid clicks.
  • Zoom is not needed for most cuts, but you can type exact times for precision.
  • Keep your original file, since the trimmed copy is a new file.
  • For long recordings, trim in two steps: cut roughly, then refine.

Formats and file size

Your browser decodes the file, then the tool writes it back out as 16-bit WAV. A WAV of one minute of stereo audio is about 10 megabytes. Files larger than 150 megabytes are not accepted, to keep your browser responsive.

Limits

This tool keeps one continuous part of one file. It does not remove a section from the middle, change the speed or pitch, or save MP3 files. Some formats, such as certain M4A or FLAC files, may not open in every browser.

Why use this audio trimmer tool

  • See and drag the waveform. Drag the start and end handles on the waveform, or type exact times in minutes and seconds for precise cuts.
  • Listen before you save. Play just the selected part, so you can check the cut before you download.
  • Fade in and fade out. Add a fade of up to five seconds at the start or end for a smooth finish.
  • Private and free. The audio is decoded and cut in your browser, never uploaded, and the result has no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I trim an MP3 online?

Choose your MP3 file, drag the blue handles to keep the part you want, and press Download trimmed audio. You can listen to the selection first. The trimmed file is saved as WAV.

Why is the trimmed file a WAV and not an MP3?

The tool saves WAV, which keeps the sound exactly as it is decoded and works in nearly every player and editor. WAV files are larger than MP3 files. If you need an MP3, convert the WAV with an audio converter afterwards.

What audio formats can I open?

Any format your browser can play, which usually includes MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and often FLAC. If a file will not open, try another format or a recent browser.

Can I make a ringtone with this?

You can cut the part of a song you want and download it as a WAV file. Many phones need a specific format such as M4A or MP3 for ringtones, so you may need to convert the file. Only use music you have the right to use.

Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and cut inside your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.
