How to use Sort Lines

  1. Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. Choose a sort type from the dropdown.
  3. Copy the sorted result.

Alphabetical vs numeric order

Computers compare text character by character, so “10” sorts before “2” because “1” comes before “2”. For lists of numbers choose Numeric, which compares the actual values. For names, titles and words, A–Z with case ignored gives the order people expect.

Handy ways to use it

  • Alphabetise a bibliography, glossary or shopping list.
  • Put numbers, scores or prices in ascending order.
  • Order items by length to find the shortest or longest.
  • Reverse a list, for example to show newest entries first.
  • Shuffle names for a raffle or to randomise a presentation order.

Combine with other tools

Sorting makes duplicates sit next to each other, which makes them easy to spot. Use Remove Duplicate Lines afterwards to clean the list completely.

Sorting rules and special cases

Alphabetical sorting here uses your browser’s locale rules, so accented letters such as é sort next to e instead of after z. Uppercase and lowercase mix naturally when “Ignore case” is on. Numbers inside text are compared as characters, so “item10” comes before “item2” in A to Z order; use the numeric mode when each line starts with a number.

The sort is stable, meaning lines that compare as equal keep their original relative order. That helps when you sort in several passes, for example by length first and then alphabetically.

Why use this sort lines tool

  • Six sort modes. A–Z, Z–A, numeric, by length, reverse and shuffle.
  • Language-aware. Uses locale comparison so accented letters sort sensibly.
  • Case option. Ignore case for natural alphabetical order.

Frequently asked questions

How does numeric sort work?

Each line is read as a number from its start, so 2 comes before 10. Plain A–Z sorting would place 10 before 2.

Can I shuffle a list randomly?

Yes. Choose Shuffle and press “Shuffle again” for a new order, useful for drawing names or randomising quiz questions.

Does it keep blank lines?

Yes, blank lines are treated as empty text and sort to the top in A–Z order.
