How to use Remove Extra Spaces

  1. Paste or type your text into the input box.
  2. Tick the clean-up options you want, such as collapsing spaces or removing blank lines.
  3. The cleaned text appears instantly on the right, along with how many characters were removed.
  4. Press Copy to take the result with you.

What this tool does

Whitespace problems are among the most common annoyances when you move text between programs. A sentence copied from a PDF may carry hard line breaks in the middle of each line, an email may include trailing spaces, and a spreadsheet cell may be padded with several blank characters. This tool gives you a quick way to normalise all of that without installing anything or opening a word processor.

You choose which clean-up steps apply. The steps run in a fixed, predictable order: special spaces become normal spaces, tabs optionally become spaces, repeated spaces collapse into one, each line is trimmed, and then blank lines or all line breaks are removed if you asked for that.

Practical uses

  • Tidy text pasted from a PDF, where lines often break in odd places.
  • Prepare a list or address for a form field that rejects extra spaces or line breaks.
  • Clean exported data or log snippets before comparing them with another version.
  • Remove accidental double spaces before submitting an essay or article.
  • Flatten a multi-line paragraph into one line for use in a script, spreadsheet cell or command.

Limits and privacy

Collapsing spaces only affects runs of the regular space character after special spaces have been converted, so intentional indentation at the start of a line is also flattened when Trim each line is on. Switch that option off if you need to keep indentation, for example in source code or poetry.

Because everything runs locally in your browser, even confidential text stays on your device. Very large documents of many megabytes may feel slow on older phones, so split them into parts if the page becomes unresponsive.

A note on line endings: Windows, macOS and Linux have historically used different line-ending characters. The tool treats all of them as ordinary line breaks, so text from any system is cleaned the same way. If you need to keep paragraph breaks but remove the hard wraps inside paragraphs, a good approach is to run the text once with Remove all line breaks, then add paragraph breaks back by hand where you want them.

Why use this remove extra spaces tool

  • Five independent options. Collapse repeated spaces, treat tabs as spaces, trim each line, remove blank lines or remove all line breaks, in any combination.
  • Handles unusual spaces. Non-breaking spaces and wide Unicode spaces copied from web pages and PDFs are converted to normal spaces first.
  • Live result. The output updates as you change an option, so you can see the effect immediately.
  • Private. Your text is processed in your browser and is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my text have double spaces?

Double spaces usually come from typing two spaces after a full stop, from copying text out of PDFs or emails with fixed-width layouts, or from joining lines that already ended in a space. They are invisible in many fonts but can break search, matching and formatting.

What is the difference between removing blank lines and removing line breaks?

Removing blank lines deletes only empty lines, so your paragraphs become consecutive lines. Removing line breaks goes further and joins every line into a single line separated by single spaces, which is handy for pasting into a form field that accepts one line.

Does it change the words themselves?

No. Only whitespace is changed. Letters, numbers and punctuation are left exactly as they were, though non-breaking and other special spaces become ordinary spaces.
