History of Brazil
Indigenous peoples lived across the region for thousands of years before the Portuguese expedition of Pedro Alvares Cabral reached the coast in 1500. Brazil became a Portuguese colony with sugar plantations worked largely by enslaved Africans. When the Portuguese court fled Napoleon and moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1808, the colony became a seat of the empire. Pedro I declared independence in 1822, and an empire lasted until the republic was proclaimed in 1889. Slavery was abolished in 1888, and a military government ruled from 1964 to 1985. The present constitution dates from 1988.
