About International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is observed every year on March 8 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to call attention to the need for gender equality. Its roots go back to women’s labour movements in the early twentieth century, and the United Nations began celebrating it in 1975 and formally invited countries to mark it in 1977.
The day is observed differently around the world. In some countries it is a public holiday, and in others it is marked with events, marches, talks and tributes. In many places, such as Russia, Italy and Vietnam, it is also an occasion for giving flowers and gifts to the women in one’s life. Purple, green and white are the traditional colours of the movement. Each year has its own theme, but messages usually express respect, gratitude and encouragement.
