History of Argentina
Before Spanish arrival, the territory of Argentina was inhabited by diverse Indigenous peoples. Spanish expeditions reached the Río de la Plata in the early sixteenth century, and the area later formed part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, created in 1776. The May Revolution of 1810 began the break from Spain, and independence was declared at Tucumán in 1816. The nineteenth century saw civil conflict and then consolidation under the 1853 constitution, along with large European immigration. The twentieth century brought alternating civilian and military governments. Democracy was restored in 1983, and Buenos Aires is the capital.
