About Day of the Dead
Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 to remember and honour family members and friends who have died. It is a joyful occasion rather than a sad one, rooted in Indigenous traditions that blend with the Catholic observances of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, and it has been recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. It is different from Halloween.
Families build ofrendas, home altars decorated with candles, photographs, favourite foods and drinks of the departed, and cempasúchil (marigold) flowers whose colour and scent are believed to guide the spirits. Other symbols are sugar skulls, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), papel picado banners and the elegant skeleton figure La Catrina. Families also visit cemeteries, clean the graves and share stories, food and music there.
How Day of the Dead is celebrated
- Building an ofrenda with photos, candles and the favourite things of the loved ones.
- Decorating with marigolds (cempasúchil), sugar skulls and papel picado.
- Baking and sharing pan de muerto.
- Visiting cemeteries to clean graves and remember with music and stories.
- Painting faces as La Catrina and joining parades.
