How to use Webcam Test
- Press Start camera and choose Allow when your browser asks for permission.
- Pick a camera and a requested resolution such as 720p or 1080p, and check the actual size and frame rate shown.
- Try the mirror, brightness and contrast controls, or go full screen to check the whole picture.
- Press Take snapshot to save a PNG or JPG, or record a short clip, then press Stop camera when you finish.
What the test shows
When the camera starts, your browser reports the settings it actually applied: the camera name, the picture width and height, and the frame rate. The tool shows those values next to a separate frame rate it measures from the live video, so you can see whether the camera keeps up.
Low light often makes cameras lower their frame rate, so a measured value below the reported one is not always a fault.
If the camera does not work
- Permission denied: use the camera or lock icon near the address bar to allow the camera, then press Start camera again.
- Camera in use: close video call apps, recorders and other tabs that may be holding the camera.
- Camera not found: check the cable, any hardware privacy shutter, and that the camera is enabled in your system settings.
- Still stuck: check the operating system privacy settings and make sure your browser is allowed to use the camera.
Privacy
The video is displayed from your camera by your browser and is processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored by this page. Stop camera releases the camera and turns off its light. Closing the tab does the same.
Limits
This tool needs a secure page (https) and a browser that supports camera access. The resolution you get depends on your camera, the browser and your system. Brightness and contrast only change the preview and snapshots, not the camera itself. Clips are limited to 30 seconds and have no audio. The measured frame rate needs a browser that supports video frame callbacks, and it is not shown otherwise.
Why use this webcam test tool
- Real camera details. See the camera name, the actual resolution the camera gave you, its reported frame rate and a live measured frame rate.
- Choose camera and resolution. Switch between cameras and request 480p, 720p, 1080p or 4K to see what your camera can really deliver.
- Snapshots and short clips. Save PNG or JPG snapshots with a small gallery of the last six, or record a clip of up to 30 seconds and download it.
- Plain-language diagnostics. A status panel explains permission, camera found, camera in use and secure page problems, with generic fixes to try.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test my webcam online for free?
Press Start camera and allow access when your browser asks. You will see a live preview right away, along with the camera name, resolution and frame rate. It is free, needs no account and no software to install.
Is my camera picture uploaded or stored?
No. The preview is shown directly from your camera in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored. Snapshots and clips are only saved if you download them to your own device.
Why does my camera not show a picture?
The most common causes are blocked permission, another app already using the camera, or a camera that is unplugged or disabled in system settings. The diagnostics panel shows which one applies and lists simple steps to try.
Why is the resolution lower than the one I chose?
The preset is a request, not a guarantee. Your browser gives the closest size the camera supports, so a basic camera may stay at 720p even if you ask for 4K. The actual size is always shown beside the preview.
How can I take a photo with my webcam?
Start the camera, adjust the mirror, brightness and contrast if you like, and press Take snapshot. The photo downloads as a PNG or JPG and the last six appear in a small gallery you can download again.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in recent mobile browsers. You can switch between the front and back camera from the camera list. Some phones limit the highest resolution a browser can request, so the actual size may be lower.
