How to use Typing Speed Test
- Choose a 15, 30 or 60 second test.
- Click the typing box and start typing the passage; the clock begins with your first key.
- Watch correct letters, mistakes and the live WPM as you go. Backspace fixes errors.
- When time ends, read your result. Press Tab or Enter at any time to restart with a new passage.
How the scoring works
The test measures two things. Net WPM is correct characters divided by five, divided by the elapsed minutes. Raw WPM uses every character you typed. The gap between them shows how much speed you lose to mistakes. Accuracy is correct characters divided by characters typed, as a percentage.
Worked example: if you type 200 characters in 30 seconds and 190 are correct, net WPM is 190 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.5 = 76, raw WPM is 200 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.5 = 80, and accuracy is 190 ÷ 200 = 95 percent. Characters are compared position by position, so one skipped letter can make following characters look wrong until you correct it.
Tips for improving
- Prioritise accuracy first; speed follows once the right keys become automatic.
- Keep your eyes on the text, not the keyboard, and use all ten fingers.
- Maintain a steady rhythm instead of bursts followed by pauses.
- Practise little and often: ten focused minutes a day beats an occasional long session.
- Sit comfortably with relaxed shoulders, and take breaks to avoid strain.
Limits and privacy
The first key press starts a timer based on performance.now, so the result depends on your device being responsive. Pasting is disabled and mobile on-screen keyboards with autocorrect can distort results, so a physical keyboard gives the fairest score. The passages are original sentences, and the page makes no network requests while you type; your results are shown only on screen and are not saved. If you want to track progress, write down your net WPM and accuracy after each session. A good routine is to take three 60 second tests, ignore the best and worst, and keep the middle score, which smooths out the luck of an easy or awkward passage.
Why use this typing speed test tool
- Live statistics. Net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and time remaining update while you type.
- Error highlighting. Wrong characters are marked in red so you can see where accuracy slips.
- Fresh passages. Sentences are drawn at random from more than thirty original lines.
- Private and offline. Timing uses your browser clock and nothing is sent or stored.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
By standard convention one word is five characters, including spaces. Net WPM counts only correct characters: correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, right or wrong, in the same way.
What is a good typing speed?
Many people type somewhere between 30 and 50 WPM on casual tasks, and 60 to 80 WPM is often considered fast for office work. Results vary by passage and practice, so use your own score as a baseline and compare it over time rather than against a single number.
Why is my score lower than on other sites?
Different tests use different passages, punctuation and rules for errors. This test includes capitals and punctuation, and an incorrect character does not count toward net speed. Short tests also fluctuate more than long ones, so try the 60 second mode for a steadier figure.
