How to use Online Voice Recorder

  1. Press Test my microphone to check your mic. Speak for a few seconds and listen to the playback.
  2. Choose your microphone and the echo, noise and gain options, then press Start recording and allow microphone access.
  3. Use Pause and Resume as needed, then press Stop. Play the result and drag the handles to trim the start and end.
  4. Type a file name and download the recording as WebM or M4A, or as WAV.

How the recorder works

When you press Start, the browser asks permission to use your microphone. The audio is recorded with the browser's own recording feature and compressed as WebM with Opus or as M4A, depending on what your browser supports. The live meter and waveform come from the same audio stream.

When you stop, the recording is decoded in the browser so you can see its waveform, trim it and export a WAV file.

Getting a clean recording

  • Use the Test my microphone button first and listen with headphones.
  • Keep the microphone a hand-width from your mouth and avoid blowing on it.
  • Leave echo cancellation and noise suppression on for speech. Turn them off for music or instruments.
  • Turn off automatic gain control if you want a steady level instead of the browser adjusting the volume.
  • Close other apps that might be using the microphone.

Microphone choice and permissions

Your browser only reveals the names of your microphones after you allow access, so the list fills in after the first test or recording. You can change the microphone before the next recording. Permission is remembered by your browser and can be changed from the address bar.

Limits

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The recording lives in memory, so it is lost if you close or reload the tab before downloading, and recording stops automatically after one hour. The tool records one continuous take with a single microphone, saves a trimmed take as WAV, and needs a recent browser that supports microphone access and recording over https.

Why use this online voice recorder tool

  • Live level and waveform. A level meter and a live waveform show that your microphone is picking up sound while you speak.
  • Built-in microphone test. Record a 5 second sample and hear it played back, so you can check volume and quality before a call or a longer recording.
  • Pause, trim and download. Pause and resume while recording, trim the ends after, and save as WebM, M4A or full-quality WAV.
  • Private by design. Recording and editing happen in your browser. Your audio is never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my voice online for free?

Press Start recording, allow microphone access when your browser asks, and speak. Press Stop when finished, then play it back and download it. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark or time limit beyond the one hour memory limit.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The audio is captured and processed inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server. Because it only exists in your tab, the recording is lost if you close or reload the page before downloading it.

How do I test my microphone online?

Press Test my microphone and speak. The level meter and waveform should move as you talk, and after 5 seconds the sample plays back so you can hear how you sound. If the meter stays flat, choose a different microphone in the list.

Why does my browser say the microphone is blocked or not found?

Blocked means access was denied: click the lock icon in the address bar and allow the microphone for this site. Not found means no input device is detected, so check that it is plugged in and enabled. If it is in use, close other apps or tabs using it.

Which format should I download, WebM, M4A or WAV?

WebM or M4A is the original compressed recording, small and good for voice, and the format depends on your browser. WAV is uncompressed and larger, but opens almost anywhere and is best for editing. Trimmed recordings are saved as WAV.

How long can I record?

The recording is kept in memory while you record, so this tool stops automatically at one hour and warns you shortly before. For long sessions, record in parts and download each one as you go.
