How to use Video Tag Generator
- Type what your video is about, for example bake sourdough bread, and choose the type of video.
- Add any extra keywords you want included, separated by commas.
- Tap tags to switch them on or off, add your own, and watch the character counter stay under 500.
- Press Copy tags and paste them into the tag box when you upload. Copy a title idea or hashtags the same way.
What to put in your tags
Start with the exact topic of the video, then add the ways a viewer might search for it: a how-to phrase, a beginner version, a short guide or a related term. Add the main words from your title, and keep the first tags the most specific.
Tags should describe what is really in the video. Adding unrelated popular terms does not help and can lead to problems with the platform.
Titles and hashtags
A good title says clearly what the viewer will get, is accurate, and puts the main words near the start. Titles can be up to 100 characters, but those under about 60 are less likely to be cut off in search results. The title ideas here are starting points; change the wording so it matches your video and your voice.
Hashtags go in the description or title. A small number of relevant hashtags is better than a long list.
Tips
- Spend more effort on a clear title, a good thumbnail and a helpful description than on tags.
- Use the extra keywords box for brand names, places or product names that belong to your video.
- Write tags in the language your viewers search in.
- Review the list before you copy it, and switch off anything that is not accurate.
- Come back and update tags if you change the video topic.
Limits and notice
This tool creates ideas from the words you enter. It does not check search volume, competition or trends, and it cannot predict views. It works with the English word forms used in its templates, so results for other languages are best treated as a starting point and edited by hand. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by YouTube or any other video platform.
Why use this video tag generator tool
- Tags, titles and hashtags. One topic gives you a list of tags, a set of title ideas for your type of video and matching hashtags.
- Counts the 500-character limit. The counter shows how much of the tag limit you have used and keeps the most relevant tags first.
- Five video types. How-to, topic or explainer, review, vlog and gaming each use wording that suits that kind of video.
- Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and there is no account to create.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate tags for a YouTube video?
Type what your video is about, choose the type of video and add any extra keywords. The tool builds a list of relevant tags, including longer phrases people might search for. Switch off any that do not fit, then press Copy tags and paste them into the tags box when you upload.
How many tags can I use?
The tags field allows about 500 characters in total, counting the commas between tags. The counter on this page keeps track of it for you. You do not need to fill the limit, and a few accurate tags are better than many loosely related ones.
Do tags help my video get views?
Tags usually play a small part compared with your title, thumbnail and description, and they cannot make a weak video popular. They can help with alternative spellings and closely related topics. Use accurate tags that describe the video, and never add misleading ones.
Does this tool show search volume or trending tags?
No. It builds tag ideas from the words you give it and common ways people search. It does not know what is trending or how many people search for a term, so treat the results as ideas to review.
How many hashtags should I use?
Use a few relevant hashtags in the description. Usually only the first few are shown, and adding a very long list can cause them to be ignored. Pick the ones that describe the video best.
