How to use Slug Generator
- Enter one or more titles, one per line.
- Choose a separator, lowercase and maximum length.
- Copy the generated slugs.
What makes a good slug
A good slug is short, lowercase, readable and describes the page. “best-pdf-merge-tools” tells both people and search engines what to expect, while “p?id=4827&ref=x” tells them nothing. Clear URLs are easier to share and get clicked more often in search results.
Slug rules of thumb
- Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only.
- Remove stop words such as “the” or “and” if the slug gets long.
- Avoid dates unless the content is truly time-bound.
- Never change a published slug without adding a 301 redirect, or you will lose links and rankings.
How the conversion works
The text is normalised so accented letters lose their marks, “&” becomes “and”, every run of non-alphanumeric characters turns into one separator, and leading or trailing separators are trimmed. Non-Latin scripts such as Arabic or Chinese are removed by this tool; transliterate them first if you need them in the slug.
Slugs and international content
For languages that use Latin letters with accents, this tool removes the accents, so “crème brûlée” becomes “creme-brulee”. For other scripts, modern search engines can read non-Latin characters in URLs, but they appear as long percent-encoded strings when shared. Many sites choose to transliterate into Latin letters by hand for cleaner links.
Whatever approach you choose, keep it consistent across the site, keep slugs stable once published, and make sure the page title and heading match the words in the slug.
Why use this slug generator tool
- Accent removal. São Paulo becomes sao-paulo.
- Bulk mode. Convert many titles at once, one per line.
- Length limit. Trim long slugs without leaving a trailing hyphen.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The slug is the readable last part of a web address that identifies a page, such as “free-pdf-tools” in example.com/free-pdf-tools.
Hyphens or underscores?
Google recommends hyphens, because it treats them as word separators, while underscores join words together.
How long should a slug be?
Short and descriptive: 3–5 words, ideally under 60 characters.
