What Markdown is for
Markdown is a lightweight way of writing formatted text using plain characters: pound signs for headings, asterisks for emphasis, hyphens for bullet points. It is easy to read even before it is converted, which is why it is used for README files, documentation, notes and many blogging platforms.
Browsers cannot display Markdown directly, so it has to be converted into HTML. This tool performs that conversion for you and shows both the visual result and the underlying code.
A quick syntax reminder
- # Heading, ## Subheading up to six levels.
- **bold**, *italic* and ~~strikethrough~~.
- - or 1. at the start of a line for bullet and numbered lists.
- [link text](https://example.com) and .
- Triple backticks around code create a code block; backticks around a word make inline code.
Safety and limits
Rendering untrusted Markdown can be risky because it may contain embedded scripts. That is why the preview on this page is always passed through DOMPurify before being displayed. If you copy HTML for use on your own website, keep sanitising on unless you fully control the Markdown source.
The converter does not fetch images or links, and your text never leaves the browser. Styling is not included in the HTML output; how headings and lists look depends on the CSS of the site where you paste them.
Different Markdown processors disagree on small details, such as how many spaces nested lists need or whether a single line break becomes a line break in the output. If your target platform renders slightly differently from this preview, consult its own Markdown documentation. Tables need a header row followed by a separator row of hyphens, and blank lines are required before and after lists and code blocks in many cases. When the preview looks wrong, a missing blank line is the most common cause.
Why use this markdown to html converter tool
- Live preview. The rendered result updates as you type.
- Sanitised output. DOMPurify removes scripts and dangerous attributes from the preview, and from the HTML output by default.
- Standard Markdown with tables. Headings, lists, links, code blocks, quotes and GitHub-style tables are supported.
- One-click copy. Copy the exact HTML you see in the HTML tab.
Frequently asked questions
Which flavour of Markdown is supported?
The converter follows CommonMark with common GitHub-style extensions such as tables, strikethrough and fenced code blocks. Very specialised extensions, such as footnotes or custom containers used by some static site generators, are not included.
Why was part of my HTML removed?
Markdown allows raw HTML inside it. With sanitising on, anything that could run code, such as script tags, inline event handlers and javascript links, is stripped. Turn the sanitise option off only if you trust the source and know you need the original markup.
Is the output a full web page?
No. You get the HTML fragment for the content, without html, head or body tags. Wrap it in your own page or paste it into a CMS that accepts HTML.
