How to use HTML to Markdown Converter

  1. Paste your HTML into the left box.
  2. Choose a heading style, bullet marker and code block style.
  3. Read the Markdown in the right box.
  4. Press Copy and paste it into your notes, README or editor.

Why convert HTML to Markdown

HTML is designed for browsers, and its tags can make content hard to read and edit by hand. Markdown keeps only the meaningful structure in a compact, readable form. Converting is useful when you move content from a website or CMS into a documentation repository, a notes app, a static site generator or a README.

The conversion is mechanical: headings become hashes, strong and em tags become asterisks, anchor tags become bracketed links, and list items become lines starting with a bullet marker.

Getting the cleanest result

  • Copy only the content you need, not the whole page with menus and scripts.
  • Choose ATX headings if your destination tool expects hash headings, which most do.
  • Use fenced code blocks for code with syntax highlighting; indented blocks are older style.
  • Review the output afterwards, especially lists nested several levels deep.
  • Check image and link addresses, since relative URLs will not resolve outside the original site.

Limits and privacy

HTML is far more expressive than Markdown, so some information is always lost in conversion, including inline styles, classes, colours, forms, and embedded media such as video. Elements without a Markdown equivalent are usually reduced to their text.

The HTML you paste is parsed in your browser only. Script and style elements are removed, nothing runs, and the text is not sent to any server.

A practical workflow is to open the page you want, select just the article area, copy it, and paste the result into a rich-text editor first if you cannot easily copy HTML source. For exact control, use your browser’s inspect tool to copy the outer HTML of a single element. After converting, skim the result for stray blank lines and escaped characters: Markdown uses symbols like asterisks and underscores for formatting, so literal ones in the original text are escaped with a backslash.

Why use this html to markdown converter tool

  • Heading styles. Use # hashes (ATX) or underlined headings (Setext).
  • List and code options. Pick -, * or + for bullets and fenced or indented code blocks.
  • Powered by Turndown. A widely used converter that handles links, images, lists, emphasis and tables of text sensibly.
  • Scripts and styles dropped. script and style elements are discarded and nothing is executed or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ATX and Setext headings?

ATX headings use hash symbols, like # Title and ## Section, and support six levels. Setext headings underline the text with equals signs or hyphens, but only cover the top two levels; lower levels still fall back to hashes.

Will tables, CSS and colours be kept?

Markdown has no way to express colours, fonts or most layout, so those are lost. The text content and basic structure such as headings, lists, links, images and emphasis are kept. Complex HTML tables usually come out as plain text rather than a Markdown table.

Can I convert a whole web page?

You can paste the page source, but navigation menus, ads and footers will be converted as well. For best results, copy only the article section’s HTML.
