History of Spain

The Iberian Peninsula was home to Iberian and Celtic peoples before Roman conquest, which began in 218 BC. Visigothic rule followed Rome, and in 711 forces from North Africa began conquering most of the peninsula. Christian kingdoms gradually advanced in the Reconquista, which ended with the fall of Granada in 1492. The marriage of Isabella and Ferdinand united the crowns of Castile and Aragon, and Spain built a large overseas empire. A civil war from 1936 to 1939 led to Franco's dictatorship, followed after 1975 by a transition to democracy under a constitutional monarchy.
