History of Morocco
Morocco's earliest known inhabitants were Berber peoples, and the Phoenicians and Romans later established trading posts and provinces along the coast. Arab armies arrived in the late 7th century, and the Idrisid dynasty founded the first Moroccan Islamic state in 788. The Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids and Saadians then ruled in turn. The Alaouite dynasty, still reigning, took power in the 17th century. In 1912 France and Spain established protectorates over most of the country. Morocco regained independence from France in 1956, and the status of Western Sahara remains disputed. It is a constitutional monarchy with its capital at Rabat.
