History of Sudan
The Nile valley of Sudan hosted the ancient Nubian kingdoms of Kerma and Kush, the latter ruling Egypt in the 8th century BC. Christian Nubian kingdoms later gave way to gradual Islamization and sultanates such as Funj. Egypt conquered the region in 1821, and the Mahdist state challenged Egyptian rule from the 1880s until an Anglo-Egyptian force defeated it in 1898. Sudan was governed as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until independence in 1956. Long civil wars followed, and South Sudan separated in 2011. Sudan's capital, Khartoum, lies at the meeting of the Blue and White Nile.
