History of South Sudan

The area was home to Nilotic and other peoples, and it later came under Egyptian and then Anglo-Egyptian rule as part of Sudan. Sudan became independent in 1956, and southern grievances contributed to civil wars lasting from 1955 to 1972 and again from 1983 to 2005. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 granted southern Sudan autonomy and provided for a referendum on independence. In January 2011 voters in the south chose separation overwhelmingly, and South Sudan became independent on 9 July 2011. Internal conflict broke out in December 2013.
