History of Angola
Before European contact, the area of Angola was home to Bantu-speaking peoples and kingdoms such as Kongo and Ndongo. Portuguese explorers arrived in the 1480s, and Portugal founded Luanda in 1575. The territory became a major source of enslaved people sent to the Americas, and Portuguese colonial control was extended inland over the following centuries. Armed anti-colonial movements began in the early 1960s. Angola became independent in 1975, after which a civil war between rival movements lasted until 2002. It is a presidential republic with Luanda as its capital.
