History of Portugal

The territory was inhabited by Celtic and Iberian peoples before Roman conquest, and later fell under Visigothic and then Muslim rule. Portugal formed in the twelfth century as a kingdom, with Afonso Henriques recognised as king in 1143. From the fifteenth century Portuguese navigators explored the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coasts and built a far-flung maritime empire. Brazil became independent in 1822. A republic replaced the monarchy in 1910, and an authoritarian regime that followed ended with the Carnation Revolution of 1974. Portugal joined the European Community in 1986 and is a parliamentary republic.
