History of Andorra
Andorra is a small state in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. According to tradition its autonomy dates to the Frankish period, and from the medieval era its territory was ruled jointly by outside overlords. A paréage agreement signed in 1278 settled shared sovereignty between the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell. The French rights later passed to the French head of state, giving rise to the system of two co-princes. Andorra adopted its first written constitution in 1993, in the same year it joined the United Nations. It remains a parliamentary co-principality.
