Speech to Text
Dictate instead of typing. Press the microphone, speak, and your words appear in an editable transcript. Choose from about 30 languages, say punctuation like comma or full stop in English, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file. It uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, which in most browsers sends audio to the browser maker's speech service, so it is not an on-device tool.
Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How to use Speech to Text
- Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Safari and choose the language you will speak.
- Press the microphone button and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Speak normally. Grey text is what is being recognised, and it turns into your transcript when you pause.
- Edit the text if needed, then press Copy or Download .txt. Press the button again to stop.
How voice typing works here
This page does not contain its own speech model. It asks your browser to listen through the Web Speech API and gives you the text it returns. While you speak, the guess so far appears in grey. When the engine is confident, the phrase becomes final and is added to the transcript, which you can edit like any other text.
Because the recognition is done by the browser vendor, accuracy, supported languages and privacy rules depend on your browser and its speech service.
Privacy: how this differs from our other tools
Most tools on this site process files entirely inside your browser and never send anything anywhere. Speech to text cannot work that way in most browsers. In Chrome, Edge and Safari the audio is sent to the browser maker's service for recognition. This site does not receive or store your audio or transcript, but you should treat dictation like using any online voice service.
Tips for better results
- Use a headset or a microphone close to your mouth.
- Pick the exact language and region you speak, such as English (India) or English (United Kingdom).
- Speak in complete phrases at a steady pace and pause briefly between sentences.
- Reduce background noise and keep other apps from using the microphone.
- Read through the transcript and correct names and technical words.
Limits
Speech recognition needs a supported browser (recent Chrome, Edge or Safari) and, in most cases, an internet connection. Firefox is not supported. Accuracy varies by language, accent and noise, and the browser may stop listening after silence. Spoken punctuation works for English only. This tool does not transcribe audio files or recordings, only live speech from your microphone.
Why use this speech to text tool
- 30 languages. English variants, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Indonesian, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Italian, Turkish, Vietnamese and more.
- Live and editable. See words appear as you speak, keep listening for as long as you like, and fix mistakes by typing straight in the transcript.
- Spoken punctuation. In English, say comma, full stop, period, question mark, exclamation mark or new line and the symbol is inserted for you.
- Copy or download. Copy the text, save it as a .txt file, and see a live word count. No account, no watermark, no time limit set by this page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert speech to text online for free?
Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Safari, pick your language, press the microphone button, allow microphone access and start speaking. Your words appear in the transcript box. Then copy the text or download it as a .txt file. It is free and needs no account.
Is my voice uploaded or private?
Not fully private. This tool uses the speech recognition built into your browser. In Chrome, Edge and Safari the browser sends audio to its maker's speech service to get the text back. We do not receive your audio or text, but the browser vendor may. Avoid dictating confidential information.
Why does it not work in Firefox?
Firefox does not support the Web Speech recognition feature that this page relies on. Open the page in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari instead. On a phone, Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone generally work.
Does it work offline?
Usually not. Most browsers send your audio to an online speech service, so you need an internet connection. If you are offline you may see a network error. Some devices can recognise speech on the device itself, but this page cannot guarantee that.
How do I add punctuation by voice?
For English languages, keep the spoken punctuation option on and say comma, full stop, period, question mark, exclamation mark or new line. The words are replaced by the symbol. For other languages the browser often adds punctuation itself, or you can type it.
Why did it stop listening on its own?
Browsers end a session after a period of silence or after a time limit. This page restarts listening automatically while you still want it on, but a pause or a microphone problem can still stop it. Press the microphone to start again.
