How to use Rotate & Flip Image
- Choose the image you want to change.
- Press the rotate buttons to turn it left, right or upside down.
- Use Flip horizontal or Flip vertical to mirror it. The preview updates instantly.
- Pick PNG or JPG and press Download.
Why images end up the wrong way round
Phone and camera sensors have a fixed physical orientation. When you hold the device upright, it records a small orientation flag instead of rotating the data. Viewers that ignore the flag show the picture sideways. Scanners and screenshot tools can also produce pages that are turned 90 or 180 degrees. Rotating and re-saving writes the correct orientation into the pixels themselves, so every program shows it the same way.
Mirroring is a separate problem. Front-facing selfie cameras sometimes save a mirrored preview, which flips any text in the photo. A horizontal flip puts the text back the right way round. Designers also flip images to change which direction a subject faces so it points toward the text on a page.
Practical uses
- Straighten portrait photos that import as landscape.
- Turn a scanned receipt, form or whiteboard photo the right way up before sharing it.
- Mirror a selfie so that signs and lettering read correctly.
- Flip a product photo so the subject faces into the page layout.
- Prepare artwork for iron-on transfers, which must be printed as a mirror image.
Output notes and limits
PNG output is lossless, which is the best choice for graphics and screenshots. JPG output is smaller for photographs, but it is recompressed at high quality, so a very slight loss is possible. Transparent areas of a PNG become white when you save as JPG, because JPG has no transparency.
Animated GIFs are saved as a single still frame, and metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the new file. Everything runs locally in your browser, so no picture is uploaded, and extremely large images are limited only by your device memory.
Why use this rotate & flip image tool
- Lossless 90 degree turns. Quarter turns move pixels without resampling, so sharpness is preserved when you save as PNG.
- Combine freely. Rotate and flip in any combination and see the final orientation before you download.
- Live size readout. See how the width and height change after rotation so you know the new dimensions.
- No upload. The image never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rotating and flipping?
Rotating turns the picture around its centre, like turning a photo on a table. Flipping creates a mirror image: horizontal flip swaps left and right, vertical flip swaps top and bottom. A mirrored picture cannot be reproduced by rotation alone, which is why both options exist.
Why does my photo look sideways on one device but upright on another?
Cameras often store photos in their sensor orientation and add an EXIF tag that says how to turn them. Some apps respect the tag and others ignore it. Modern browsers apply it when loading, so what you see here is what the saved file will look like, with the rotation baked into the pixels.
Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle such as 15 degrees?
No. This tool deals only with quarter turns and mirroring, because arbitrary angles require resampling and leave empty corners. For small straightening adjustments use a full photo editor.
