How to use Image to Text Converter

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP image, drop it onto the page, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. Tick Improve contrast if the picture is faint, grey or slightly blurry.
  3. Press Recognise text and wait for the percentage to reach 100. Press Cancel to stop at any time.
  4. Fix any mistakes in the text box, then press Copy or Download .txt.

How the text is read

The tool uses optical character recognition, which looks at the shapes in a picture and matches them to letters. It runs inside your browser, so the first time you press Recognise text it loads the reader from this website, which takes a moment.

Very large images are shrunk so the longest side is at most 3000 pixels. This keeps reading fast and your browser responsive without hurting normal text.

Tips for better results

  • Use a straight, well-lit photo with the page filling most of the frame.
  • Higher resolution helps. Small text in a tiny picture reads poorly.
  • Try Improve contrast for faded prints, grey scans and photos with uneven lighting.
  • Crop away borders, photos and decoration before loading if you only need one block of text.
  • Check numbers, names and punctuation by eye. They are the most common mistakes.

The confidence figure

After reading, the page shows an overall confidence percentage reported by the reader. It is a rough guide, not a guarantee. A high figure can still hide a few wrong words, and a low figure usually means the picture was hard to read.

Limits

This tool reads English printed text only. Handwriting, low-resolution photos, curved or tilted text, tables, multiple columns and unusual fonts read poorly, and the layout of the original is not kept. Results always need proofreading. It processes one image at a time, and everything happens in your browser with nothing uploaded.

Why use this image to text converter tool

  • Paste, drop or choose. Load an image from a file, by dragging it in, or by pasting a screenshot straight from the clipboard with Ctrl+V.
  • Optional contrast boost. Convert to greyscale and sharpen the picture before reading, which can help with faded or low-contrast text.
  • Edit, copy, download. The result appears in an editable box with a word and character count. Copy it or save it as a plain text file.
  • Private by design. The image is processed on your device with files served from this site. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account or watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from an image for free?

Choose your image, drop it onto the page or paste it with Ctrl+V, then press Recognise text. When the percentage reaches 100 the text appears in a box where you can edit it, copy it or download it as a .txt file. It is free and needs no account.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is read in your browser using text recognition files that are served from this website. Nothing is sent to another server, so private documents and screenshots stay on your device.

Which languages does it read?

English only at the moment. Text in other languages or alphabets will come out as wrong letters or nonsense. Numbers and common punctuation in English text are usually fine.

Why is the text wrong or missing in places?

Text recognition works best on clear, straight, high-resolution printed text. Blur, small print, shadows, curved pages, decorative fonts and handwriting all lower accuracy. Try the contrast option or a sharper image, and always proofread the result.

Can I turn a screenshot into text?

Yes. Take a screenshot, open this page and press Ctrl+V to paste it, or save it as a PNG and choose it. Screenshots usually read very well because the text is sharp and printed in a clean font.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in a recent browser. Choose a photo from your gallery or camera. Large photos are shrunk to a sensible size first, and reading can take longer on a phone than on a computer.
