How to use Favicon Generator

  1. Choose a logo or image, ideally square and at least 512 pixels wide.
  2. Pick whether to crop it to a square or fit the whole image with padding, and optionally set a background colour.
  3. Check the previews of each size.
  4. Download the ZIP, upload the files to your site root, and paste the link tags into your page head.

What a favicon set contains

A favicon is the small icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, history and search results. Over the years the requirement grew from a single 16 pixel file to a handful of sizes. The 16 and 32 pixel versions serve desktop tabs and high-density screens, the 48 pixel size is used by some Windows shortcuts, the 180 pixel image is the Apple touch icon shown when someone adds your site to an iPhone or iPad home screen, and the 192 and 512 pixel images are used by Android and progressive web apps.

The ZIP produced here contains each PNG with conventional file names, a favicon.ico, and an HTML file with the link tags. Upload the images to the root of your site and paste the tags between the head elements of your pages.

Design tips for tiny icons

  • Use a simple, high-contrast mark. Fine detail and small text disappear at 16 pixels.
  • Keep important parts away from the edges, especially for the 192 and 512 icons that some phones crop into circles.
  • Choose Crop to square for already square artwork, and Fit whole image for wide logos.
  • Add a solid background colour for the Apple icon, because iOS fills transparent areas with black.
  • Test on both light and dark browser themes.

After you upload

Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so a changed icon may take hours or days to appear. Opening the icon URL directly and refreshing, or using a private window, helps you verify the new file. If you use a web app manifest, add the 192 and 512 pixel entries to its icons list.

This generator does not create SVG or maskable icons, and it does not read HEIC pictures. Because all work happens locally, your logo is not uploaded or stored.

Why use this favicon generator tool

  • Six PNG sizes. 16, 32 and 48 for browser tabs, 180 for iOS, 192 and 512 for Android and web app manifests.
  • Real favicon.ico. A multi-size ICO is assembled from the 16, 32 and 48 pixel PNGs.
  • Ready-made HTML. Copy link tags that reference the generated file names.
  • Private. No upload; images are resized with your browser canvas.

Frequently asked questions

What size should my source image be?

Use a square image of at least 512 by 512 pixels. The tool scales it down for the smaller icons, and scaling down gives better results than scaling up. A simple logo with bold shapes stays readable at 16 pixels, while detailed artwork turns into mush.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

Modern browsers accept PNG icons declared with link tags, but many tools, feed readers and older browsers still request /favicon.ico automatically. Including one avoids missing icons and error entries in server logs.

How is the ICO file made?

An ICO file is a small header followed by image entries. This tool stores the 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions as embedded PNG data inside that container, a format supported by all current browsers and recent versions of Windows.
