Color Picker from Image

Upload a picture, click or tap a spot, and read the exact colour of that pixel as HEX and RGB. A magnifier helps with precision, and an automatic panel lists the six main colours in the image.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How to use Color Picker from Image

  1. Choose an image.
  2. Click or tap a point on the picture, or press and drag to scrub across it while watching the magnifier.
  3. Copy the HEX or RGB value, and press Add to palette to keep it.
  4. Click a dominant colour chip to add it to your palette, then copy the whole palette.

Colours from pictures

Designers often start a project from a photograph: a brand logo, a sunset, a product shot. Matching a colour by eye is unreliable, so sampling the real pixel gives a precise code to use in CSS, design tools or presentation software. HEX writes the red, green and blue amounts as three two-digit hexadecimal numbers, such as #1A73E8. RGB lists the same amounts from 0 to 255.

Photographs are rarely flat. A blue sky contains thousands of slightly different blues, so one click returns just that pixel. Move around, sample a few spots, and pick the value that best represents the area. Dragging while the magnifier is visible helps you land on a typical pixel instead of an edge.

Getting better results

  • Use the original, uncompressed image when you can; heavily compressed JPEGs add noisy pixels.
  • Avoid picking at edges where two colours blend together.
  • Sample several points in a gradient and compare them.
  • For logos, a PNG sampled in a flat area gives the cleanest value.
  • Use the dominant colours as a starting palette, then adjust them for contrast and accessibility.

Limitations and privacy

Very large images are scaled to a maximum of about 2400 pixels on the longest side for sampling, which can change fine detail slightly but does not alter flat colours. Transparent pixels are ignored when finding dominant colours.

The picture never leaves your device. It is decoded and sampled by your browser, and the palette exists only on this page until you close or refresh it.

Why use this color picker from image tool

  • Pixel-accurate picking. Reads the exact pixel under the pointer and displays a zoomed grid of its neighbours.
  • HEX and RGB. One-click copy for CSS-ready values.
  • Dominant colours. Shows the six most prominent colours using a simple colour-bucket count.
  • Palette builder. Collect up to 24 colours and copy them all in one go.

Frequently asked questions

How are the dominant colours calculated?

The image is shrunk, then each pixel is grouped into one of 4096 colour buckets (16 levels per channel). The most populated buckets are averaged, and near-duplicates are skipped so the six results look distinct. It is a simple method, not a perceptual model, so treat it as a quick guide.

Why does the colour differ slightly from what I see in another app?

Pictures can contain colour profiles, and displays vary. This tool reports the raw values the browser draws, which may not match software that applies a different colour space. Photo compression and anti-aliasing at edges also change individual pixels.

Can I pick colours from my screen outside the browser?

Not with this tool. It samples only the image you upload. Take a screenshot of the area you are interested in and upload that instead.
