Convert CSV to JSON

Paste CSV or upload a file and get a JSON array of objects, using the first row as keys. The delimiter is detected automatically and everything runs locally.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How to use CSV to JSON

  1. Paste CSV text or upload a .csv file.
  2. Check the delimiter and options such as “first row is header”.
  3. Copy the JSON or press “Download JSON”.

Why convert CSV to JSON?

CSV is the format spreadsheets export, while JSON is what websites, APIs and apps consume. Converting between them is a common step when you load spreadsheet data into a web application, seed a database, mock an API response for testing, or feed records to a script.

The converter treats the first row as column names and creates one JSON object per remaining row, producing an array like [{"name":"Asha","age":30}, ...] that you can paste straight into code.

Getting a CSV out of Excel or Google Sheets

In Excel choose File → Save As → CSV (Comma delimited). In Google Sheets choose File → Download → Comma-separated values. Upload that file here, or open it in a text editor and paste the contents.

Options explained

  • Delimiter: most files use commas, but European exports often use semicolons, and some tools use tabs or pipes. Auto-detect checks the first lines and picks the most frequent one; you can override it.
  • First row is header: leave this on if row one holds column names. Turn it off and the keys become column1, column2 and so on.
  • Convert numbers and booleans: when on, 42 becomes the number 42, true becomes a boolean and empty cells become null. When off, everything stays a string. Leave it off when you must keep leading zeros, such as postcodes or phone numbers.
  • Pretty print: indents the result for reading; turn it off for compact output.

How tricky CSV is handled

Real-world CSV contains quoted fields, commas inside values, doubled quotes and even line breaks inside a cell. This parser follows the standard rules, so "Smith, John" stays one field and "He said ""hi""" becomes He said "hi". Blank lines are skipped, and a leading byte-order mark from Excel is removed.

The whole conversion happens in your browser, so private spreadsheets such as customer lists or financial data are never uploaded.

Why use this csv to json tool

  • Auto-detect delimiter. Comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
  • Typed values. Optionally turn numbers, true/false and empty cells into real JSON types.
  • Handles quotes. Quoted fields, embedded commas and line breaks parse correctly.
  • Private. Your spreadsheet data never leaves the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Excel file to JSON?

In Excel choose Save As → CSV, then upload that CSV here.

What if my CSV has no header row?

Turn off “First row is header”. Keys become column1, column2 and so on.

Will leading zeros be kept?

Only if “Convert numbers” is off. With it on, 007 becomes 7.

Is there a size limit?

None from us. Files of tens of thousands of rows convert quickly in modern browsers.
