CSV Delimiter Converter
Switch a delimited text file between comma, semicolon, tab (TSV) and pipe separators. The delimiter is detected automatically, quoted fields are handled correctly, and you can preview the table before downloading.

How to use CSV Delimiter Converter
- Open a file or paste delimited text into the input box.
- Leave the input delimiter on Auto-detect, or choose it yourself if the guess is wrong.
- Pick the output delimiter: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
- Check the preview table, then copy the output or download the file.
What a delimiter is
A CSV file stores a table as plain text: each line is a row and a separator character divides the columns. Despite the name, comma-separated is only one of the conventions in use. Tab-separated files (TSV) are common for data exported from databases and scientific tools. Semicolons are standard in regions where commas are decimal marks, and the pipe character is popular for logs and legacy system exports because it rarely appears in real data.
Problems start when a program expects one delimiter and receives another. A spreadsheet opens a semicolon file as a single column; an import tool rejects a tab file. This converter fixes the mismatch without opening a spreadsheet.
Practical tips
- If the preview shows everything in one column, the input delimiter is wrong; select it manually.
- Use TSV when your text contains many commas, because tabs rarely appear inside values.
- Check that numbers with decimal commas are not split by a comma delimiter before converting to comma separated.
- Keep the header row; the converter treats all rows equally, so nothing is lost.
- For huge files, a desktop tool may be faster, because everything here runs in browser memory.
Limits
Auto-detection looks at the first few lines and picks the most frequent separator, so a file whose first lines contain many commas in quoted text but uses semicolons as the real delimiter may be misread; choose the delimiter yourself in that case. Ragged files with a different number of columns per row are kept as they are rather than padded.
The tool changes only the separators and quoting. It does not alter values, convert dates or numbers, or fix character encoding problems such as garbled accents caused by a file that was not saved as UTF-8. Your data is processed locally and never leaves the page.
Why use this csv delimiter converter tool
- Auto-detection. Counts separators in the first lines to guess whether the file uses commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes.
- Proper quoting. Fields containing the delimiter, quotes or line breaks are quoted and escaped correctly in the output.
- Preview table. See the first rows as a table to confirm the columns line up before you download.
- Private. Files are read locally by your browser and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some CSV files use semicolons?
In many countries that write decimals with a comma, such as Germany, France and much of Europe, spreadsheet programs save CSV with a semicolon as the separator so the comma can remain a decimal mark. Converting to comma separated is the usual fix when a tool expects the international style.
Are quoted fields with commas inside safe?
Yes. The parser follows the common CSV rules: a field wrapped in double quotes can contain delimiters, line breaks and doubled quotes. On output, fields are quoted again only when needed.
What line endings and encoding does the output use?
The output uses CRLF line endings, which every spreadsheet reads, and plain UTF-8 text. A byte-order mark at the start of the input is removed. If a program needs a BOM to detect UTF-8, add one in a text editor.
