How to use Excel to CSV Converter
- Choose or drop an .xlsx file. It is read locally in your browser.
- Pick the sheet you want and check the preview of the first 50 rows.
- Set the delimiter (comma, semicolon or tab) and decide whether to add a UTF-8 BOM.
- Download the sheet as a CSV file, or download every sheet at once as a ZIP.
What this converter does
An Excel workbook (.xlsx) is a zipped bundle of XML files that describe sheets, cell values, styles and more. A CSV file is far simpler: plain text where each line is a row and values are separated by a delimiter. This tool reads the workbook in your browser, takes the values from the sheet you select, and writes them out as CSV text. Values that contain the delimiter, quotation marks or line breaks are wrapped in quotes and escaped correctly, so the file re-imports cleanly.
Because only values are kept, formatting such as colours, column widths, merged-cell styling, charts and images is not carried over. That is usually what you want when moving data into a database, a script, an analytics tool or an import form that asks for CSV.
Choosing delimiter and encoding
Comma is the standard CSV delimiter, but some regions use a comma as the decimal separator and therefore expect a semicolon between fields. If your spreadsheet software splits columns incorrectly after opening the file, try the semicolon option. Tab-separated output is useful for pasting into other tools and for data that contains many commas.
The UTF-8 BOM option adds a short invisible marker at the start of the file. Excel on Windows often uses it to recognise UTF-8; without it, names with accents or non-Latin scripts can appear garbled. Most programming tools and databases do not need the BOM, and a few show it as a stray character in the first header, so turn it off for those cases.
Limits and tips
Only .xlsx is supported, and the tool cannot open password-protected or damaged files. Very large workbooks depend on your device memory, since the whole file is read in the browser; if a file is slow, export a smaller sheet range from Excel first.
- Check the preview to confirm the header row and the first few records.
- Numbers are exported as stored in the file, without thousands separators or currency symbols.
- Empty rows in the middle of a sheet are kept; trailing empty rows are ignored.
- Keep your original workbook; the converted CSV has no formatting to go back to.
Why use this excel to csv converter tool
- Sheet picker and preview. See the first 50 rows of any sheet in a table before you export, so you can confirm it is the right data.
- All sheets as ZIP. Workbooks with several sheets can be exported in one go, one CSV per sheet, packed into a single ZIP file.
- Delimiter and BOM options. Choose comma, semicolon or tab, and optionally add a UTF-8 byte order mark so Excel opens accented text correctly.
- Private by design. The file is parsed on your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Does this support old .xls files?
No. Only the modern .xlsx format (Excel 2007 and later) is supported. If you have a legacy .xls file, open it in Excel or LibreOffice, choose Save As and pick .xlsx, then upload the new file.
Can it open password-protected workbooks?
No. Encrypted or password-protected files cannot be read here. Remove the password in Excel first (File, Info, Protect Workbook), save a copy, and convert that copy.
What happens to formulas and dates?
Formulas are exported as the last value that was saved in the file, not as the formula text. If a value looks out of date, open the workbook in Excel, let it recalculate, save it and convert again. Dates are written in ISO format, yyyy-mm-dd, which most databases and tools understand.
