About Vaisakhi
Vaisakhi, also written Baisakhi, falls on April 13 or 14 and marks the solar new year and the spring harvest in the Punjab region. For farmers it is a time to celebrate the ripening of the wheat crop. For Sikhs it is also one of the most important days of the year, as it commemorates the founding of the Khalsa, the community of initiated Sikhs, by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib in 1699.
Celebrations include visits to the gurdwara, kirtan (devotional singing), Nagar Kirtan processions led by the Panj Pyare, community meals called langar, and Punjabi folk dances such as bhangra and gidda. Large Vaisakhi parades take place in cities such as Southall, Surrey and Toronto. The same date is celebrated as the new year in other parts of India under different names, such as Pohela Boishakh in Bengal and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.
How Vaisakhi is celebrated
