About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan, meaning “the bond of protection”, is a festival that celebrates the love between brothers and sisters. It falls on the full-moon day of the month of Shravana, usually in August. On this day a sister ties a decorative thread called a rakhi around her brother’s wrist, prays for his well-being and applies a tilak. In return, the brother gives a gift and promises to protect and support her.

The festival is celebrated across India, Nepal and by Indian communities worldwide. Many people also tie rakhis to cousins, close friends and even soldiers or neighbours, as a gesture of care and goodwill. Sisters who live far away often send rakhis by post and greetings by phone. The day is marked with festive meals and sweets, and the greeting is “Happy Raksha Bandhan” or “Happy Rakhi”.
