About Mahavir Jayanti
Mahavir Jayanti, also called Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, is the most important festival of Jainism. It celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and last Tirthankara, who lived in ancient India around the sixth century BCE. It is observed on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra, usually in March or April.
Jains mark the day by visiting temples, taking part in processions with an image of Mahavira, and bathing the idol in a ritual called abhishek. Many people listen to sermons on his teachings of ahimsa (non-violence), truth, non-stealing, celibacy and non-attachment, donate to charity, and feed the poor. Some also release animals from slaughter and avoid harming any living being. The greeting “Jai Jinendra” is commonly used on this day.
