About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak (born in 1469 at Nankana Sahib, now in Pakistan), the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. It is observed on the full-moon day of the month of Kartik, usually in November.

Celebrations begin days earlier. Gurdwaras hold continuous readings of the Guru Granth Sahib (Akhand Path), the festival day is marked with kirtan and processions called Nagar Kirtan, and gurdwaras are decorated with lights. Langar, the free community kitchen that Guru Nanak began, serves meals to everyone regardless of background. The central teachings of Guru Nanak, honest work, sharing with others and remembering God, shape the greetings of the day.
