How to use Watermark PDF

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Type the watermark text, for example DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. Use Latin characters only.
  3. Adjust size, opacity, rotation and colour until it suits the document.
  4. Press Add watermark to download the watermarked PDF.

What watermarks are used for

A text watermark tells readers something about the status of a document at a glance. DRAFT warns that the content is not final, CONFIDENTIAL limits where it should travel, SAMPLE marks a preview copy, and a person or company name shows who a copy was issued to. Because the mark appears on every page, it still shows when only a single page is photographed or forwarded.

Making it readable but not intrusive

A good watermark is visible without making the page hard to read. Mid-grey at 15 to 30 percent opacity works for most documents, and a diagonal angle of about 45 degrees is the traditional choice because it crosses the text blocks without hiding any single line completely. For heavy-text pages, go fainter; for presentations with lots of white space, you can use a stronger colour.

  • Keep the text short, one or two words, so a large size fits the page width.
  • Lower the opacity if body text becomes hard to read.
  • Use 0 degrees for a horizontal banner and 45 for the classic diagonal.
  • Check a landscape page, since the available width is different.

Limits and privacy

The tool adds one centred line of text per page. It does not support image watermarks, tiled patterns, page ranges or non-Latin scripts. The watermark is drawn on top of existing content, so it can cover small details if it is opaque. Password-protected PDFs cannot be modified.

The edit runs entirely in your browser with pdf-lib. Your PDF is never uploaded or stored on any server.

Why use this watermark pdf tool

  • Full control of appearance. Size, opacity from faint to solid, rotation from -90 to 90 degrees, and any colour.
  • Applied to every page. The text is centred on each page, including landscape and rotated pages.
  • Bold option. Switch between regular and bold Helvetica.
  • Private. Processing happens in your browser; the file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why only Latin text?

The watermark is drawn with the Helvetica font that every PDF viewer already has, so no font file has to be embedded. That font covers letters, digits, punctuation and accented characters of Western European languages. Scripts such as Arabic, Devanagari, Chinese, Japanese and emoji are not supported, and the tool will tell you if your text contains something it cannot draw.

Can someone remove the watermark?

Treat it as a visible marker, not security. The text is added as normal page content, and someone with PDF editing software can remove or cover it. It deters casual reuse and labels a document clearly, but it does not prevent copying.

Why does my watermark run off the page?

Long text at a large size is wider than the page. Reduce the size, shorten the text, or lower the rotation angle. The tool does not shrink text automatically, so what you set is what is drawn.
