PDF Metadata Editor

Every PDF carries hidden document information such as its title, author, the software that produced it and the dates it was created and changed. This editor shows all of it, lets you change or remove any field, and saves a new file without touching the pages.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How to use PDF Metadata Editor

  1. Choose a PDF. Its title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates appear in editable fields.
  2. Edit any value, pick dates and times with the calendar, or press Remove all metadata to blank everything.
  3. Optionally also remove the embedded XMP packet and any custom properties, which are shown when the file has them.
  4. Press Save PDF to download a new file. Page count and PDF version are shown for reference and are read-only.

What PDF metadata contains

Metadata is information about a document rather than part of its visible pages. In a PDF it usually lives in the document information dictionary: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the application that authored the original, such as a word processor), Producer (the program that converted it to PDF) and two timestamps. Many files also carry an XMP packet, an XML copy of similar data, and sometimes custom properties added by workflow software.

Search engines, file managers, reference managers and accessibility tools read this information. A good title shows in the browser tab and in search results; keywords and subject help with sorting and finding documents in large collections.

Why metadata can leak private details

Metadata is easy to forget because it is invisible. Yet it often contains the full name of the person who wrote the document, a company or computer account name, the exact software and version used, and timestamps that reveal when work was done. A file titled Final offer v3 with the author set to a colleague can disclose more than intended when you share it publicly, send it to a client or submit it for anonymous review.

  • Remove the author before sharing a draft anonymously.
  • Clear the producer and creator if you do not want to reveal your tools.
  • Check dates when the timeline of your work is confidential.
  • Set a clear title so the document is recognisable in tabs and search results.

Limits and good practice

This editor changes document properties only. It does not scrub text, comments, hidden layers, attachments or form values, and it cannot make a file anonymous on its own. Encrypted or password-protected files cannot be opened; remove the password first. If you edit a file that is digitally signed, the signature will no longer validate, as any change to the file breaks it.

The tool runs entirely in your browser, so the file is not uploaded. Dates are shown in your local time zone. Always keep the original file until you have opened the saved copy and confirmed the properties look right.

Why use this pdf metadata editor tool

  • All standard properties. Title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer, plus creation and modification date and time.
  • Genuine removal. Blank fields are deleted from the file rather than stored empty, and the tool does not add its own producer or modification date.
  • XMP and custom entries. Detects the second metadata copy many apps embed and any custom properties, and lets you strip them too.
  • Pages stay untouched. Only the document information is rewritten; page content, forms and links are kept exactly as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata really remove it?

The standard document information fields are deleted from the file, and with the extra options ticked the XMP packet and custom properties go too. The tool also avoids stamping its own producer or modified date, which many PDF libraries do by default. Note that other things can still identify a document, for example text in the pages, embedded font names, attached files or form field values, which this tool does not change.

Why does my PDF show a different author in different programs?

A PDF can store the author in two places: the classic document information dictionary and an XMP packet. Some viewers read one, some the other. If you edit the information fields but leave the XMP packet, an old value may still appear elsewhere. Tick the option to remove XMP when you need the change to be consistent.

What does the PDF version number mean?

It is the version of the PDF specification the file declares in its first line, such as 1.4 or 1.7. It is shown for information and cannot be edited here, because changing it does not change what features the file actually uses.
