What a watermark is for

A watermark is visible text or a logo placed over a picture to show who made or owns it. Photographers use them on portfolio previews, businesses use them on product shots shared with partners, and teachers use them on shared worksheets. A watermark also helps people trace a picture back to its creator when it gets reposted.

Two main styles exist. A discreet corner mark preserves the image and works as a signature. A tiled mark repeats across the whole frame, which suits proofs and previews that you do not want used as final artwork.

Choosing settings

  • Keep corner marks around 3 to 6 percent of the image width so they stay legible without dominating.
  • For tiled marks, a lower opacity such as 20 to 35 percent keeps the picture usable while still deterring reuse.
  • Use an angle of around minus 30 degrees for a classic diagonal pattern.
  • Short text, such as a name or domain, reads better than a long sentence.
  • Export PNG to avoid extra compression, or JPG for smaller files.

Technical notes

The watermark is rendered at the full resolution of your image, and the preview on screen is simply a scaled view. Very large pictures may take a moment to redraw as you move sliders. The text uses your device default sans-serif font, so the exact look can vary slightly between systems.

Metadata from the original file, including EXIF location, is not copied to the new image, because the result is drawn onto a fresh canvas. Nothing is uploaded at any point.

Why use this watermark image tool

  • Position control. Nine placements: corners, edges and centre.
  • Tile mode. Repeat the text in staggered rows at any angle to make removal harder.
  • Adjustable look. Size is relative to image width, so a setting works for both small and large photos.
  • Original untouched. The watermark is drawn on a copy in your browser and your source file is never altered or uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watermark stop people from copying my image?

No. It discourages casual reuse and makes the source obvious, but it cannot prevent copying. A tiled watermark across the middle of the picture is much harder to crop out than a small one in the corner, at the cost of being more distracting.

What colour and opacity work best?

White at 40 to 60 percent opacity is visible on most photos. On bright images try a dark colour. The text has a faint shadow to help it stay readable on mixed backgrounds.

Can I add a logo image as a watermark?

This tool supports text watermarks only. For a logo, use an editor that supports image layers.
