How to use UTM Link Builder
- Type or paste the website address you want to link to.
- Fill in campaign source, medium and name. Term and content are optional.
- Check the tracking link that appears and press Copy link.
- Press Save link to keep it in your history, and download the history as CSV when you need it.
What UTM parameters do
UTM parameters are short labels added to the end of a web address. When someone clicks the link, analytics software reads the labels and credits the visit to the right source, medium and campaign.
They only help for links you control, such as email newsletters, social posts and ads. Do not add them to links inside your own site, because that can overwrite the real source of the visit.
The five parameters
- utm_source: where the traffic comes from, such as google or newsletter.
- utm_medium: the type of channel, such as cpc, email or social.
- utm_campaign: the name of the promotion, such as spring_sale.
- utm_term: the paid search keyword, optional.
- utm_content: tells apart links in the same campaign, optional.
Naming tips
Agree on a naming scheme before you start and keep to it. Use lowercase, underscores instead of spaces and short, clear names. Keep a list of campaign names so the whole team uses the same ones.
Limits
All work happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The history keeps the latest 100 links in this browser only. The tool checks that the address is a valid http or https address, but it cannot check that the page exists. Very long links may be shortened by some platforms.
Why use this utm link builder tool
- Correct encoding. Parameters are added with the browser URL tools, so spaces and special characters are encoded properly and existing query parameters are kept.
- Common presets. Pick typical sources such as google or newsletter and mediums such as cpc or email from suggestions, or type your own.
- Consistent naming. An option turns values to lowercase and replaces spaces with underscores so the same campaign is not split into several rows in reports.
- Saved links and CSV. Keep a list of links in this browser, copy or delete them, and download the whole list as a CSV file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a UTM link for free?
Enter your page address, then fill in source, medium and campaign name. The tool adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to the address as you type. Press Copy link and use it in your ad, email or social post. No account is needed.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Most analytics tools expect source, medium and campaign. Term is mainly used for paid search keywords, and content helps tell apart two links to the same page, such as two buttons. This tool warns you if one of the three main fields is empty.
Does it keep the parameters already in my URL?
Yes. If your address already has a query string, such as ?ref=home, it stays in place and the UTM parameters are added after it. If a UTM parameter already exists it is replaced with the value you enter.
Should I use uppercase or lowercase in UTM values?
Analytics tools usually treat values with different capital letters as different entries, so Email and email can appear as two rows. Using lowercase everywhere avoids that, which is why the lowercase option is turned on by default.
Are my links stored anywhere?
No. The saved list lives only in your browser storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes the list, so download the CSV if you want to keep a copy.
