Hash Generator (SHA-256)

Type text or choose a file to get its SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums at once, computed locally with the Web Crypto API.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How to use Hash Generator (SHA-256)

  1. Type text, or press “Hash a file instead”.
  2. Read the four hashes that appear.
  3. Copy the one you need, or compare it with a published checksum.

Verifying a download

Software sites often publish a SHA-256 checksum beside each download. After downloading, hash the file here and compare. If the two strings match exactly, the file is intact and unmodified. If they differ even by one character, the file is corrupted or has been tampered with and should not be used.

Which algorithm to choose

  • SHA-256: the current default for integrity checks, signatures and blockchain.
  • SHA-512: a longer variant, sometimes faster on 64-bit machines.
  • SHA-1: considered weak against deliberate collisions; use only for legacy compatibility such as Git object IDs.
  • For storing passwords, never use plain SHA; use a dedicated password hashing function.

Private by design

Hashing happens with the browser’s built-in crypto engine. A file you drop here is read into memory, hashed and discarded. It is never uploaded, so even large or confidential files are safe to check.

Why use this hash generator (sha-256) tool

  • Text and files. Verify a download without uploading it anywhere.
  • Four algorithms. SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 together.
  • Uppercase option. Match whichever format a checksum is published in.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hash?

A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and any tiny change gives a completely different one.

Can a hash be reversed?

No, hashing is one-way. Weak passwords can be guessed by trying many inputs, which is why passwords need salted, slow hashes such as bcrypt or Argon2, not plain SHA.

Where is MD5?

MD5 is broken for security and is not provided by the browser’s Web Crypto API. Use SHA-256 for new work.
