How to use Unix Timestamp Converter
- Paste a timestamp in seconds or milliseconds, or pick a date and time.
- Read the converted UTC, ISO and local values.
- Press copy beside the format you need.
Why developers use timestamps
Dates written in words are ambiguous: is 03/04/2026 the third of April or the fourth of March? And what time zone? A Unix timestamp is a single number that means the same instant everywhere. Databases, logs, JWT expiry fields and APIs all use it because numbers are easy to compare, sort and do arithmetic on.
Useful reference points
- 86,400 seconds in a day.
- 3,600 seconds in an hour.
- 0 = 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC.
- 1,700,000,000 = 14 November 2023 22:13:20 UTC.
- 2,000,000,000 = 18 May 2033 03:33:20 UTC.
Time zone tips
The timestamp itself has no time zone; only the displayed date does. When you convert, the UTC line is unambiguous and the Local line depends on your device’s settings. Store and transmit timestamps or ISO 8601 UTC strings, and convert to local time only when showing it to people.
Common pitfalls with timestamps
The most frequent mistake is mixing seconds and milliseconds. A seconds value treated as milliseconds lands in January 1970, and a milliseconds value treated as seconds lands tens of thousands of years in the future. Check the digit count first: ten digits is seconds, thirteen is milliseconds.
Another is assuming a timestamp carries a time zone. It does not, so two people in different countries see the same number and different local clocks. Daylight saving changes shift the local display but never the timestamp, which is why storing timestamps is safer than storing local date strings.
Why use this unix timestamp converter tool
- Auto-detects units. Seconds and milliseconds are recognised automatically.
- Live clock. The current Unix time updates every second.
- Multiple formats. UTC, ISO 8601 and local time zone.
Frequently asked questions
What is Unix time?
Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, called the epoch. It is a simple, time-zone-free way to store moments in time.
Seconds or milliseconds?
A 10-digit value like 1700000000 is in seconds; 13 digits like 1700000000000 is milliseconds (JavaScript’s Date.now()). The tool detects which.
What is the Year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit integer overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.
