How to use Split Bill Calculator

  1. Choose Equal split or Unequal split.
  2. Enter the bill amount and number of people, or add each person with their own items total.
  3. Pick a tip with the quick buttons (10, 15, 18, 20) or type your own percent, and add tax if it is not already in the bill.
  4. Read the amount each person pays on the right. Tick the round-up box if you want whole amounts.

Splitting evenly

An equal split works well when everyone ordered similar things or you agreed to share. The tool adds tax and tip to the bill, then divides by the number of people.

  • Bill plus tax plus tip equals the total.
  • Total divided by people equals each share.
  • Rounding up makes cash payment easier.

Splitting by what each person ordered

If one person had a starter and another only a drink, an equal split is not fair. In unequal mode you enter each person's own items. Shared tax and tip are then divided in proportion, so a person whose items are twice as large pays twice as much tax and tip.

Shared dishes can be added to each person's total by splitting them yourself before you enter the numbers.

Tips and tax

Tip customs differ between countries and venues, and some places include a service charge already. Check your bill before adding a tip. If tax is already in the bill, leave the tax box empty to avoid paying it twice.

Limits

All calculations happen in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter. Amounts are shown to two decimal places, so the shares can differ from the exact total by a cent or two. Check against your actual bill, and note that the tool does not know local tax or service charge rules.

Why use this split bill calculator tool

  • Equal or unequal split. Divide evenly, or list names with their own item totals so people pay for what they ordered.
  • Tip and tax shared fairly. In unequal mode the tip and tax are divided in proportion to each person's items.
  • Round up per person. Round each share up to a whole amount and see the small extra this adds.
  • Quick tip buttons. One tap for 10, 15, 18 or 20 percent, or type any custom tip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with tip for free?

Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percent and type how many people are sharing. The calculator adds the tip, then divides the total evenly and shows each person's share. There is nothing to install and no account is needed.

How do I split a bill when people ordered different amounts?

Switch to Unequal split, add each person and type the total of their own items. The tool works out each person's share of the tax and tip based on how large their items are compared with the whole bill, then shows what each one pays.

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Customs vary. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. This tool applies the tip to the bill or items amount you enter. If your bill already includes tax, enter the pre-tax figure here to tip on that amount.

What does rounding up per person do?

It raises each share to the next whole amount so it is easy to pay in cash. The small extra beyond the exact total is shown, and it usually works out as a slightly larger tip for the server. You can change any value at any time and the result updates immediately, so it is easy to compare a few different options before deciding.

Is my bill information uploaded?

No. The numbers and names you type stay in this page and are used only to calculate the result on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is saved when you close the page. It works on your own device, so it is safe to use with private figures, and it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded.
