How to use GPA Calculator

  1. List each course with its credit hours and pick the letter grade.
  2. Optionally open Edit grade point scale if your school uses different values, such as A+ = 4.3.
  3. To include earlier terms, fill in previous credits completed and previous cumulative GPA.
  4. Read the semester GPA, the cumulative GPA and the quality points breakdown.

What a GPA is

Grade point average condenses all your letter grades into a single number between 0 and 4 on the most common US scale. Each letter maps to grade points, and each course is weighted by its credit hours so larger courses influence the result more.

Worked example: Calculus, 4 credits, A- (3.7) gives 14.8 quality points. English, 3 credits, B+ (3.3) gives 9.9. Physics, 4 credits, B (3.0) gives 12.0. The total is 36.7 quality points over 11 credits, so the semester GPA is 36.7 / 11 = 3.336, shown as 3.336.

Cumulative GPA works the same way across terms: (current quality points + previous credits × previous GPA) / (current credits + previous credits).

Using the result well

  • Plan ahead by changing a planned grade to see how much a single course moves your cumulative GPA.
  • The more credits you have already completed, the less a single term changes the cumulative figure.
  • Use the same scale as your institution when comparing with your transcript.
  • Keep weighted or honors scales separate; this tool uses the values you enter without adding bonus points.

Limits and privacy

This is an unofficial estimate. Registrars decide the official scale, rounding and how repeated courses or transfer credits are treated, so use your transcript for applications. Credits can be fractional, and grade point values you edit are accepted up to 20.

All calculations run in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Why use this gpa calculator tool

  • Plus and minus grades. Includes A+ to F with the widely used 4.0 values, such as A- = 3.7 and B+ = 3.3.
  • Editable scale. Change any grade point value to match your institution, then reset to the default whenever you like.
  • Cumulative GPA. Combine the current term with your earlier credits and GPA to see where you stand overall.
  • Credit weighted. A four-credit course counts more than a one-credit course, exactly as on a transcript.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course’s credits by the grade points for its letter grade to get quality points, add them up and divide by total credits. Three credits of A (4.0) and four credits of B (3.0) give (12 + 12) / 7 = 3.43.

Why does my GPA differ from my school’s figure?

Schools set their own scales. Some give A+ more than 4.0, some have no plus or minus grades, and policies for repeated courses, pass/fail grades and withdrawals differ. Edit the scale to match your handbook.

How do I remove a pass/fail course?

Set its grade to Not counted or leave its credits blank. It will be ignored in the GPA.
