Why CGPA needs converting
Many universities report a cumulative grade point average on a 10-point scale, while employers, scholarships and some foreign institutions ask for a percentage. A conversion formula bridges the two. The most widely quoted rule multiplies the CGPA by 9.5, which assumes that a CGPA of 10 corresponds to just under 100 percent.
Worked example: a CGPA of 8.2 multiplied by 9.5 is 77.9 percent. In reverse, 77.9 divided by 9.5 returns 8.2. A CGPA of 7.0 gives 66.5 percent, and 9.0 gives 85.5 percent.
Rules vary
There is no single international standard. Some boards multiply by 9.5, some by 10, some by other factors, and some publish a lookup table or a different formula for different CGPA ranges. That is why this page lets you edit the multiplier. If your institution gives a formula such as percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, this tool will not match it, so use that formula instead.
- Check your university’s regulations or your results booklet.
- When in doubt, ask the registrar for an official equivalence letter.
- Use the same multiplier consistently across applications.
Limits and privacy
The tool accepts a CGPA between 0 and 10 and a percentage between 0 and 100, and it warns you if the reverse conversion would produce a CGPA above 10. It does not round to your institution’s rules, so round the displayed figure as your application requires. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored. As a rough reference with the 9.5 rule, a CGPA of 6.0 gives 57 percent, 7.5 gives 71.25 percent and 9.5 gives 90.25 percent. Remember that a percentage derived by formula is an equivalent, not a mark that was awarded, so some institutions ask for their own certified conversion.
Why use this cgpa to percentage calculator tool
- Custom multiplier. Defaults to 9.5 but accepts any positive value so you can follow your own institution’s rule.
- Both directions. Convert CGPA to percentage and percentage back to CGPA with the same multiplier.
- Formula shown. The calculation is written out so you can quote or verify it.
- Input checks. Out-of-range values, such as a CGPA above 10, are flagged instead of giving a misleading number.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula?
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 under the common convention. A CGPA of 8.2 gives 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. The reverse is CGPA = percentage / 9.5.
Is 9.5 official?
No. It is a common convention used by many institutions, but conversion rules vary by university and board. Some use a different multiplier or a table, so check your institution’s official method.
Will employers or universities accept this result?
Only if they accept the formula. For applications use the conversion stated on your transcript or the one the receiving institution requires.
