How to use Free Resume Builder
- Upload your existing resume (PDF, Word and more) to fill the form automatically, or choose “Start from scratch” or “Try a sample”.
- Check and complete your details on the Content tab: contact information, summary, work experience, education and skills. Put one achievement per line.
- Open the ATS check tab to see your score and, optionally, paste a job description to find missing keywords.
- Open the Design tab to choose a template, colour, text size, margins and paper size (A4 or US Letter), and to reorder or hide sections.
- Watch the live preview on the right. When you are happy, press “Download PDF” or “Download Word”.
- Press “Backup” now and then to save a file you can restore later, because your resumes are stored only in this browser.
How to write a resume that gets read
Recruiters often spend well under a minute on a first pass, and an ATS may filter before a person ever looks. Lead with a short summary, then list your most recent experience first. Each job should show results, not just duties: “Reduced failed payments by 42%” says more than “Responsible for payments”.
Start each bullet with an action verb, add a number where you honestly can, and keep bullets to one or two lines. Aim for one page if you have under ten years of experience and two pages at most for longer careers.
Tailor it to each job
Read the job description and reuse its exact wording for skills you genuinely have, such as tool names and certifications. ATS keyword matching often looks for the same phrases that appear in the posting. Reorder your bullets so the most relevant ones come first, and use the Duplicate button on the home screen to keep a tailored version for each application.
What to leave out
Skip photos (in most countries), personal details such as age or marital status, skill rating bars, and “References available on request”. Do not put contact details in headers or footers, where parsers often miss them. Keep fonts simple and consistent.
Why use this free resume builder tool
- 20 free templates. Classic, modern, minimal, executive, compact, tech, academic and more. Every template and both download formats are free, with no sign-up, no paid tier and no watermark.
- Start from your existing resume. Upload a PDF, Word, text, RTF, ODT or HTML resume, a scan or photo, or your LinkedIn data export, and the form is filled in for you. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
- Private by design. Everything runs in your browser and your resume is stored only on your device. This page is also restricted by a content security policy that blocks it from sending data to other servers.
- PDF and Word downloads. Download a PDF with real, selectable text for online applications, or a Word document that recruiters can open and edit.
- Built for applicant tracking systems. Single-column layouts, standard section titles, real text and real bullet points. No tables, text boxes, images of text or icon fonts that confuse parsers.
- ATS check and job-description match. A built-in checklist scores your resume on contact details, standard sections, action verbs, measurable results and length. Paste a job posting to see which of its key terms your resume already contains and which are missing.
- Live preview that matches the file. The preview is drawn from the same layout as the PDF, so what you see is what you download.
- Backup, auto-save and offline. Save a small backup file and restore it on any computer. In Chrome and Edge you can also link a file on your computer so every change is saved to it automatically. After your first visit the builder keeps working without an internet connection.
Frequently asked questions
Is this resume builder really free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial, no watermark and no limit on downloads. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs almost nothing to provide.
Where is my resume stored?
Only in your own browser, using the storage built into it. It is not uploaded to any server and we cannot see it. Because of that, clearing your browsing data can delete it, so use the Backup button to keep a copy.
How is the ATS score calculated?
It is our own checklist, not the output of a real employer system. It awards points for things applicant tracking systems and recruiters reliably respond to: a name, email and phone number, standard section headings, a useful skills list, achievements that start with action verbs and include numbers, dates on every job, sensible length, and (if you paste a posting) overlap with the job description. Real systems differ, so use it as a guide and not as a guarantee.
What is an ATS-friendly resume?
Many employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) that reads your resume as text and sorts it into fields. Resumes with simple single-column layouts, standard headings such as Work Experience and Education, and real text are read most reliably. Tables, text boxes, columns and graphics can scramble the order or hide content.
Should I send a PDF or a Word file?
Follow the instructions in the job posting. If none are given, a PDF keeps your layout exactly as designed. Some recruiters and agencies ask for Word so they can edit or reformat it, so both downloads are provided.
Can I use accented or non-English characters?
Yes for the Latin alphabet with accents (Polish, Turkish, Czech, Vietnamese and so on), Cyrillic and Greek: they work in both the PDF and the Word file, and the PDF stays readable by applicant tracking systems. Scripts such as Devanagari, Arabic and Chinese are not drawn in the PDF yet and show as a question mark; the preview warns you. The Word download keeps them.
Can I start from my existing resume?
Yes. On the start screen, choose your current resume as a PDF, Word (.docx), text, RTF, ODT or HTML file, or your LinkedIn data export (.zip). The details are read inside your browser and placed into the form so you can pick a new template. Scans and photos (PNG, JPG, or an image-only PDF) are read with built-in text recognition, which is less accurate, so check every line. Always review the result, because automatic reading can misplace a title or date.
