How to use JSON to YAML Converter
- Paste JSON or upload a .json file.
- Choose 2 or 4 space indentation.
- Copy or download the YAML.
When YAML is the better choice
JSON is great for machines, but for files that humans maintain, such as deployment configs, YAML is nicer: no braces or quotes everywhere, and you can add comments to explain settings. Converting an existing JSON file is a quick way to start a YAML config.
How JSON maps to YAML
- Objects become indented key: value pairs.
- Arrays become lists with a leading dash.
- Strings are quoted only when needed, such as when they look like numbers or booleans.
- null, true and false are kept with the same meaning.
After converting
Add comments to explain non-obvious values, check indentation consistency when you merge the output into a larger file, and keep two spaces per level, which is the convention for most tools. Validate the final file with the tool that will consume it, such as kubectl or docker compose config.
Checking the converted file
After converting, scan the result for strings that the converter wrapped in quotes. That is deliberate: values such as "true", "null", "123" or "2026-10-17" would otherwise be read back as a boolean, null, number or date. The quotes keep them as text and preserve your original meaning.
If you are going to use the YAML in Kubernetes, GitHub Actions or Docker Compose, validate it with that tool’s own linter before deploying. Each tool expects specific keys, which no generic converter can know about.
Why use this json to yaml converter tool
- Clean output. Readable block-style YAML with no line wrapping.
- Validates JSON. Reports syntax errors in the input.
- Private. Data stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert JSON to YAML?
YAML is easier for people to read and edit, supports comments and is the standard for many config files.
Is the conversion lossless?
Yes for data. The YAML represents exactly the same values, though formatting details such as key order in whitespace are chosen by the converter.
Can I convert back?
Yes, use our YAML to JSON converter.
