How to use JSON to XML Converter

  1. Paste your JSON into the left box, or press Load sample to see an example.
  2. Set the root element name, for example order or response.
  3. Pick an indent size, or Minified for one compact line, and decide whether to keep the XML declaration.
  4. Copy the XML or download it as a .xml file.

Why convert JSON to XML

JSON and XML both describe structured data, but different systems prefer different formats. Modern web APIs mostly speak JSON, while many enterprise integrations, SOAP services, payment and banking interfaces, RSS-style feeds, configuration files and older government systems still require XML. When you hold data in one format and a partner system expects the other, a reliable converter saves you from writing a one-off script.

This tool handles the common case: turning a JSON document into elements and text. It is useful for preparing test payloads, generating fixtures for an XML-based service, or simply inspecting how a JSON structure would look as markup.

How the mapping works

Every JSON object becomes an element whose children are its keys. Strings, numbers and booleans become the text content of an element, with the characters &, < and > escaped so the result stays well-formed. Arrays repeat the parent key for each entry. Because XML requires exactly one root element, whatever you type in the root name field wraps the whole document.

  • Objects become nested elements.
  • Primitive values become text content.
  • null and empty strings become self-closing elements.
  • Keys are sanitised so they are legal XML names.
  • Attributes are not generated; every value becomes an element.

Limits and tips

JSON and XML are not perfectly interchangeable. XML has attributes, mixed content, comments and namespaces that JSON cannot express, and JSON has typed values that XML stores only as text. Converting to XML and back will therefore keep the data but not always the original types, and an element that holds a single item cannot be distinguished from a one-element array.

If the receiving system expects specific element names, attributes or a schema, treat this output as a starting point and adjust it. Very large documents are processed in your browser memory, so extremely big files may feel slow on a phone. Because nothing is sent to a server, it is safe to paste internal or sensitive payloads.

Why use this json to xml converter tool

  • Correct escaping. The characters &, < and > in values are escaped, so the output is always well-formed.
  • Configurable root. JSON has no single root name, so you choose one. Names are cleaned to be valid XML names.
  • Pretty or minified. Indent with 2 or 4 spaces or a tab, or produce a single compact line.
  • Private by design. Conversion runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

How are JSON arrays converted?

An array inside an object repeats the element once per item, so "tags": ["a","b"] becomes two <tags> elements. An array at the top level, or an array inside another array, is wrapped in the root or parent element with each entry written as an <item> element.

What happens to keys that are not valid XML names?

XML element names cannot contain spaces or start with a digit. The converter replaces illegal characters with underscores and adds a leading underscore where needed, so "first name" becomes first_name and "1st" becomes _1st.

Why is null written as an empty element?

XML has no null value. A JSON null becomes a self-closing element such as <note/>, which is the usual convention. An empty string produces the same element, so the two cannot be told apart after conversion.
