How to use Ideal Weight Calculator

  1. Choose male or female.
  2. Choose centimetres or feet and inches, and enter your height.
  3. Read the four formula results in kg and lb.
  4. Compare them with the healthy BMI weight range shown above them.

The four formulas

Each formula starts with a base weight for 5 feet of height and adds a set amount for every inch above 5 feet.

  • Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch. Originally used for drug dosing.
  • Robinson (1983): men 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch, women 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch.
  • Miller (1983): men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch, women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch.
  • Hamwi (1964): men 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch, women 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch.

The healthy BMI range

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For your height, the tool multiplies height squared by 18.5 and by 24.9 to find the lowest and highest weight in the healthy band.

Using the results

If your weight falls inside the BMI range, you are likely fine whatever the formulas say. The formulas are a rough guide. Muscle, frame size, age and health matter more than any single number.

Limits

These are estimates only and not medical advice. The formulas are for adults and ignore age, muscle and body build. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing your weight. Calculation happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight for my height?

It depends on the method. The four formulas here give slightly different answers for the same height, and the healthy BMI range gives a wider band. Treat the overlap as a sensible target, not an exact number.

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

None is clearly best. They were written for different purposes, such as drug dosing, and they ignore muscle, bone size and age. That is why this tool shows all four together with the BMI range.

What is a healthy BMI range?

A BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is the range commonly called healthy for adults. The tool turns it into a weight range for your height. BMI does not measure body fat, so athletes and older adults may differ.

Do the formulas work for short or tall people?

They were built around heights above 5 feet, adding a set amount for each inch over 5 feet. This tool accepts 120 to 230 cm, but the results for very short or very tall people are less reliable.

Is my height stored anywhere?

No. The numbers stay in your browser and are not uploaded or saved.
